Background
The Red Bull X-Alps presents an extreme information-processing and decision-making challenge: athletes must navigate 1,200+ km of complex Alpine terrain while interpreting shifting weather, balancing risk, and making high-stakes decisions under fatigue. The race not only requires intense physical preparation, but also mental preparation and team building.
Adventure
I spent 20-40 hours a week training and flying in the year leading up to the race; however, the most challenge was establishing the teams roles, communication norms, and trust. This ultimately evolved through the race itself and I had to adapt the team mid race to establish clear expectations and reinstil trust between each member. I had to let go of my own pride and remember that we would achieve nothing if we could not performe as a team.
